I heard a sermon today about the parable of the man that found a treasure of great price in a field. He covered it up, sold everything he had and bought the field. We know that in Jesus’ parables, He’s the main character of the story. Take a look at this:
“The LORD has today declared you to be His people, a treasured possession, as He promised you, and that you should keep all His commandments;
Just as Jesus declares that we are HIS treasured possession, we would consider a relationship with Him and knowledge of Him OUR treasured possession. OF COURSE he wouldn’t make a parable a single layer deep! What fun would that be? So Jesus considers humankind to be a treasure and in response to being treasured, we keep all his commandments. Now He loves all of us and offers all of us a choice of whether to love and follow Him. Some say yes, and some don’t. The ones that accept his love and are blessed tend to bless those around them. Just as Jesus sacrificed his life to save this treasure, we sacrifice the trivial things of life to follow Him. When we get upset because we can’t keep up with the Jones’, (and I know some Jones’ and they are REALLY hard to keep up with!) we must realize that positioning ourselves in relationship to another person is like rearranging the grains of sand on a beach. What difference does it make over an eternity of time? Concentrate your effort on the true treasure…a right relationship with Jesus.
